فكانso was فصيحthe eloquent spokesman الحيof the tribe بالصمتto silence أجدراmore suited
You have outstripped congratulations in rank and eminence,
You chose to give greetings and rank of high stature,
So the tribe's eloquent spokesman was better suited to silence.
So the eloquent among the living were better off remaining silent.

And you exceeded the bounds of praise, so whenever
You surpassed the extent of praise, so whenever
My tongue sought to describe your qualities, it fell short.
My tongue tried to mention and describe you, it fell short.

And your praise was sweet, widespread in assemblies,
You pronounced praise in gatherings, broadcasting it,
Just as you were noble in lineage, root, and origin.
Just as you pronounced the essence and principle originally.

You make the dusty passes green again with your bounty's dew,
You return dusty gloom to fresh verdure,
And with your martial might turn dawn's light dust-grey.
And bring back the dawn’s radiance through force made dusty.

And you bring dawn where calamity is an encroaching night,
You make dawn appear where calamity’s night was pitch black,
So you turn it into the first light of a radiant morning.
Then bend it to become a gentle morning, reddened.

The steadfast, lofty mountains long for Ibn Khalid's forbearance,
The steadfast desire your wise forbearance, like the clemency of Ibn Khalid,
When the great chief groans like a camel under calamity's weight.
When the valorous strain to carry the greatest burden.

When calamity's uproar clamors in his ears,
When the clamor of speeches deafens his hearing,
You see in him Mount Sharawra and the breeze as it flows.
You see my trepidation and the breeze when it flows

Pure in his heart's impulses, ready to relent,
At peace, the impulses of my heart calmly returning,
He loves pardon all the more when his power is greater.
More passionate for pardon since you are most capable.

A young man who seeks honor only to give aid,
A noble knight who seeks glory only to rescue
Nor wealth except for lavish gifts and hospitality.
And wealth only for desires and households.

And a host with two seething dust-clouds and countless spears,
Brandishing spears, straining steeds frothing at the mouth
When it halts at noon in the open, the land turns pitch-dark.
When they gallop into the open plain with rattling armor.

So dense the throng of armored men, it seems
The thronging of warriors so dense, as if they are
Like the crests of a torrent, swollen and pouring down.
Raging torrents cascading headlong.

It marched forth, filling minds with terror and awe,
Tomorrow they will fill minds with fear and awe,
And turned the wastelands into slender spears and armor.
And turn valleys into withered desolation.

And waded through the pools of the plain until you thought them
They penetrated the valley’s depths until I thought them
Soft, crumbly ground and churned-up yielding sand.
To be locust swarms chaotically scattered about.

And the far-off wild beasts fled before it in fear
The wildlife fled them in terror
Of pursuit, until the jinn abandoned Abqar.
Of being chased away, so that even jinn deserted the valley.

Its blades, upon the backs of a dust-cloud, seemed
As if their cavalry in ships’ holds
Like lightning flashes driving the dense clouds onward.
Were clouds, vultures emulating the swooping flight.

Then you left it either routed and driven off,
Then I left them, whether routed in retreat
Slain by the wastelands, or freshly slain in armor.
Or slain, their corpses strewn about.
