Words to him, while pride makes his side sway,
Words for him, and arrogance wrinkles his brow,
And his finery and his manners are honey-sweet.
His adornment honey-sweet, and his traits,

He floods the outskirts with blood; yet ridden
He lets blood flow through the suburbs, and mounts
Toward no peril are his sleek steeds and his neighing horses.
To no comfort his steed and his weapons.
أتفخرُdo you boast? أنthat سُمِّيتَyou were named عيداًEid (festival) وللعُلىand for glory
ببعدادَin Baghdad عيدٌa festival ماnot تَغِبُّmiss a day نَوافِلُهْhis bounties
Do you boast that you were named Eid, when glory has
Do you boast you were named a feast? While in Baghdad
In Baghdad a festival whose gifts never cease?
A feast that its rituals never go missed,
يسُرُّgladdens بنيthe sons of الدنياthis world منfrom الحولthe year مرةًonce

إِلىto الحوْلthe year نزرٌa scant amount منof ندىًbounty أنتyou باذلهbestowing it
The sons of this world are gladdened once, from one year
The world rejoices in it once a year,
To the next, by the scant bounty you bestow.
While you are but a bit of dew I can spare.
وسرَّand gladdened ابنُIbn (son of) حمادٍHammad بنيthe sons of الدهرtime دائماًcontinually
فلمso did not يعْدُناpass us by يوماًfor a day نَداهُhis bounty ونائلُهْand his gifts
And Ibn Hammad gladdened the sons of time continually,
Ibn Hammad's secret was always to smile through time,
So his bounty and gifts never passed us by for a day.
Never once failing us, his day and his night.

وعَقْرِand slaying أعاديهِhis enemies حدادٌsharp مَناصِلُهْhis blades
You came to hamstring the aged she-camels; as for him, in hamstringing them
Yet you came to slay the Prophet in his home,
And in slaying his enemies, his blades are keen.
And slay his foes, though mourning's blades still bite.

The clan's young champion, radiant of brow, striving
A lad alive and bright of brow, resolved
For glory—his aged she-camels and reproachers suffer.
To glory though his Prophet's life it took

A chieftain whom keen-edged swords fear,
A leading man of refined manners is feared
And the clouds' milk and their downpour envy him.
Envied by stars and clouds that rain and pour

When the two seas, Khubr and Khidram, meet,
When the two seas meet: Hudaybiyyah and Khudayr,
His generosity and his virtues carry them both away.
His superiority and merits show all the more.
