Whenever the benefits of a season's bounty return

to the people, the seasons themselves receive bounty from you.

    فبأسك مضَّاءٌ وجودكَ ساجم

    You have filled people's days with bounty and valiant aid;

for your might cuts keenly, and your generosity pours down.

And through your great self-restraint and piety, you have become

as though fasting for God throughout all time.

When drought parches the land and the clouds withhold

rain in their appointed stellar seasons,

and the deep water of the Two Rivers becomes like

stagnant water in a scant pool, its moisture consumed by scorching winds,

then desert-dweller in the land and townsman fare alike,

and alike are the gazelles of the wilderness and the frogs.

No morning journey offers anything but loose earth and treacherous ground,

which its camel-hooves—the footpads—vie to trample.

You have offered wealth and safety without ulterior motive,

so neither does oppression kill nor drought deprive.

The hospitality of ʿAḍud al-Dīn, acknowledged for his generosity

and valiant aid, is pouring rain and keen-edged swords.

So blessed be the month of fasting, and all time,

through him, as long as doves sing above the arak trees.

He is obeyed in prohibitions and commands; feared

is his might, and hoped for his bounty, while he remains safe.
