Husam al-Dawlatayn, Ibn Sandaq, dispels its gloom.

A youth whose white sword-blades detest their scabbards,

so he sheathes them with blows in every head's crown.

and outdoes the smile of glittering lightning.

A valiant man, deft in turning, whose lance-thrusts suffice

when the flanks of finely tapered spear-shafts stretch out.

and resolve to attain his wishes, and eloquence.

And at morning he goes forth on terror's day—what a man of proven mettle!

And an army, roaring like the Euphrates' torrent,

for which every barren waste and level plain is too narrow:

as though she-ghouls hurling themselves at watering places

were its battle-champions on the withers of swift steeds.

You charged them with a Bakaji charge,

so you left them either fallen or bound.

Bakr Sunqur opens the way to success for wishes,

and the gate of the desired goal is no longer shut.

The sword's baldric hangs upon him—a keen blade,

bold, even when calamities make a gray camel hobble.

He joins an Arab nature to a Turkish one,

and so enfolds lofty virtues in a shirt and a yalmaq coat.
