When, at times, I praise Muʿizz al-Din,

Then neither Zuhayr nor Harim is worth mentioning.

    أوْ جاد فالبحر يستحيي ويحتشمُ

    If I speak, pearls conceal their lovely luster;

Or, if he gives, the sea is ashamed and abashed.

He is generous while the sky's clouds withhold their rain,

And a smiter of heads while the armored host rages.

Victorious in his endeavors and his quest,

Through his good fortune, dullards and dumb beasts succeed.

Not so submissive that his softness emboldens his foes,

Nor clamorous and irritable toward his followers.

And frowning while the foul-mouthed speaker smiles.

Steadfast and bold in council and in battle,

Mountains and keen swords continually envy him.

Thus some souls are freed by gracious forbearance,

At one time, and others cut off by bitter might.

[A face?] and a hand: one radiant beside one pouring forth,

As the sun's rim and the steady rains face one another.

For the supple, giving hand relieves its petitioner's poverty,

And before the radiant, beaming face, darkness is dispelled.

Are servants to Sanjar and Sanjar's lofty glories.

So no refuge-seeker who defies him has a refuge.

As though it were nearby, for dread of his might.

You were singled out for a praiseworthy secret from God,

To which pure-blooded Arabs and non-Arabs have bowed.

Your horses, galloping in raids, seem

Wolves of the wilderness, and the enemy's horsemen sheep.

When they complain of hunger from the toil of pursuit,

Their only food is dust and bridles.

And how many lands you entered, their soil spread as bedding,

Then turned away, their soil covered with moldering bones.

Fear slew him when the champions missed him.

He walked to you humbled after his former might,

Fearing death, his life shielded by pledges of protection.

Your arrow, when you aim it at the target, is like

Your sound judgment when wise counsels fail.

Your resolve, when its promptings press onward, is like

Your sword's edge, neither glancing off nor breaking.

Your noble steed, galloping on four legs, is like

The fingers of your hand when generosity flows through them.

Master of kings and master of the entire earth,

And he to whom kings and nations have submitted.

May your safeguarding of Dubays gladden you—a noble deed

Whose praises endure as long as the acacia puts forth leaves.

In him you preserved a lofty edifice of the Arabs,

And it almost collapsed, but for your loyal protection.

With whom gracious kindness and sacred bonds flourish.

From a people who give bright swords their fill of blood,

And give food when hardships grow severe.

So give him your support, with honor and reinforcement,

That his homelands and blessings may return to him.

You entrusted your subjects' affairs to a resolute, watchful man,

Resourceful and learned; thus ignorance and want perished.

Not a greedy man whose craving corrupts his judgment,

Nor base in ambition; he is a treasure.

He is not so obscure that one might ask, 'I wonder,

Who is the vizier?' Rather, his name is a beacon.

    فكل جارحةٍ مني بذاكَ فَمُ

    I have exhausted my thanks to you both, in word and conviction;

So every limb of mine is a mouth for that thanks.

And if the sovereign of mankind considered my aspirations,

Night would shine, and moldering bones would live again.
