Though I have been absent from the assembly of your eminence, I am
Though I am absent from your lofty gatherings,
With my heart and praise, present in spirit and standing before you.
My soul and my praise are present, standing before you.

وتُزهىand are made proud بماby what اُثْنيI praise عليكَupon you المحافلُthe gatherings
My necklaces of verse perfume the reciters’ mouths,
My poems adorn the mouths of the narrators,
And gatherings are made proud by the praise I give you.
And the assemblies are graced with my praise of you.
وأعلمُand I know مهماwhatever نِلتهُI have attained it منof بلاغةٍeloquence
بأنَّthat مديحيmy praise دونbelow مجدكَyour glory نازلُfalling
And I know, whatever eloquence I have attained,
And I know that no matter what eloquence I attain,
That my praise falls short of your glory.
My praise falls short of your glory.

The Mashrafi swords and spears yearn for your onslaught,
The eminent long for your leadership, and the brave
And milk-laden camels envy the bounty of your palms.
Envy the comfort of your repose.
وتُسفرُand you shine forth للخطبbefore calamity البهيمِpitch-black وللدُّجىand before darkness

And you shine forth before pitch-black calamity and darkness,
Dawn breaks on preachers of ignorance and darkness,
So misfortune is dispelled, and earthquakes grow still.
So evil is shunned and tremors subside.

فلاthus not الوعرrugged terrain مرهوبٌfeared ولاnor الذعرterror شاغلُdistracting
Sharaf al-Din attained the heights while still a youth,
The lofty religion grew under his youthful care,
Thus no rugged path daunts him, and no terror distracts him.
So neither hardship is feared, nor panic fills the heart.
يهونُbecomes easy عليهfor him كلevery صعبٍdifficult thing ورائعٍand fearsome thing
وفيand in الدَّستthe seat of honor منهin him العبقريُّthe peerless one الحلاحلُthe mighty chief
Every difficult and fearsome thing is easy for him,
All that is difficult and extraordinary is easy for him,
And in the seat of honor he is the peerless, mighty chief.
And in his hand the ingenious find relief.

Generous in bestowing wealth in every crisis,
Generous in spending money in every crisis,
Yet unwilling to surrender his neighbor or his honor.
But with neighbor and honor he is stingy.
اذاwhen مالكُMālik العلياءlofty renown عدَّتْrecounts فخارهاits glories
وسعْدٌand Saʿd فبالصدرthen through the chief الوزيرvizier تُساجلُvie in glory
When Mālik of high renown recounts its glories,
When the nobles count his superior merits,
And Saʿd as well, they vie in glory through the chief vizier—
Sa'd competes with an ample chest.

Through him whose carpet proud kings kiss,
With him the kings adorn their rule,
And mighty armies submit to his obeyed command.
And the obedient hosts submit to his command.
