They marveled at an Iraqi without folly,
They were astonished at an Iraqi with no foolishness
Without hypocrisy, without malice, without lies,

عاراً وإنْ جاء في المنظومِ بالعجب
Who regards pride in rhymes, arising from their breadth,
He sees the pride of rhymes in their expansion
As a disgrace, though he produces wonders in verse.
As shameful even if they appear wondrous in verse
واستعظمواand they deemed great شأنthe stature of أقواليmy words فقلتso I said لهمto them
واستعظموا شأن أقوالي فقلت لهم
إنيindeed I am وَليُّa loyal supporter of عليٍّAli سيدِlord of العربِthe Arabs
إني وَليُّ عليٍّ سيدِ العربِ
And they esteemed my words highly, so I told them:
And they were awed by my words, so I said to them
I am indeed a loyal supporter of Ali, lord of the Arabs.
I am a loyal follower of Ali, master of the Arabs
