The poet's license in what he says

is like the speech of one truthful and just,

for he proceeds to acknowledge what

he has embellished with the finery of falsehood,

like the carver of a doll, who does not claim

that it has the life of a sentient, rational being.

But it is the handiwork of one with imagination,

who likened that imperfect thing to the perfect.

And the astrologer, out of his ignorance,

makes sweeping claims of truthfulness to the questioner.

He passes judgment on people, despite his ignorance,

concerning life—what preserves it and what kills—

like a pauper unable to secure bare sustenance,

who invited the sons of poverty to receive bounty.
