زار الخيالُ بخيلاً مثلَ مُرسلهِ
فماso did not شَفانيheal me منهfrom it الضمُّthe embrace والقبلand the kisses
فما شَفاني منه الضمُّ والقبل
The phantom visited, miserly like its sender.
The imagination visited a miser like its messenger
So neither its embrace nor its kisses healed me.
Yet neither embrace nor kiss cured me of him
ماnot زارنيvisited me قطٌُever إلاَّexcept كيْin order to يواقفنيconfront me
ما زارني قطٌُ إلاَّ كيْ يواقفني

It never visited me except to confront me
It has never visited except to make me stop
About slumber, then banish it and depart.

وماand did not درىknow أنَّthat نوميmy sleep حيلةٌa stratagem نصبتْwas laid
وما درى أنَّ نومي حيلةٌ نصبتْ
لوصلهِfor union with it حينwhen أعيْاexhausted اليقظةَwakefulness الحِيلُthe stratagems
لوصلهِ حين أعيْا اليقظةَ الحِيلُ
And it did not know that my sleep was a stratagem laid
And it doesn't know that my sleep is a trick
For union with it, when stratagems had exhausted wakefulness.
