The heart has sobered from love of fair women, yet love for them

does not retreat from its lofty station.

وفرَّق جيش الجهل شيْبٌ بوجهه

وفرَّق جيش الجهل شيْبٌ بوجهه

حصينُ الحِمى لا يُدَّرى بالروادعِ

حصينُ الحِمى لا يُدَّرى بالروادعِ

And the army of folly was scattered by gray hair confronting it,

secure in its stronghold, not driven back by deterrents.

مُنعَّمةٌ لا الصَّبْرُ عنها بناصِرٍ

مُنعَّمةٌ لا الصَّبْرُ عنها بناصِرٍ

مُجيرٍ ولا العذلُ الطويلُ بنافعِ

مُجيرٍ ولا العذلُ الطويلُ بنافعِ

A pampered woman—patience apart from her is no helper

that grants refuge; nor does prolonged reproach avail.

يذود الكرى عن مقلة الصب صدها

يذود الكرى عن مقلة الصب صدها

ويسخر عند الوصل من نفس هاجع

ويسخر عند الوصل من نفس هاجع

Her rejection drives slumber from the lover's eye,

and at union he mocks a sleeper's soul.

أُسِرُّ هواها غَيْرةً فتُذيعُهُ

أُسِرُّ هواها غَيْرةً فتُذيعُهُ

حرارةُ أنفاسِ وفيضُ مدامع

حرارةُ أنفاسِ وفيضُ مدامع

I conceal my love for her out of jealousy, but it is betrayed

by the heat of my breaths and the overflow of my tearful eyes.

وأُظْهرُ سِلواني لها ووراءهُ

وأُظْهرُ سِلواني لها ووراءهُ

غرامٌ كضرب المُرهفاتِ القواطِعِ

غرامٌ كضرب المُرهفاتِ القواطِعِ

And I show her my detachment, yet behind it

lies passion like the blows of keen, cutting blades.

فلما استراح العذل من بعد شِدَّةٍ

فلما استراح العذل من بعد شِدَّةٍ

إلى بارقٍ في مفرق الرأس لامِعِ

إلى بارقٍ في مفرق الرأس لامِعِ

Then, when reproach, after its harshness, found relief

in a lightning-flash gleaming at the parting of my hair,

تضاعفَ شيطانُ الهوى فكأنما

تضاعفَ شيطانُ الهوى فكأنما

أطاف بغمْرٍ في الخلاعةِ يافعِ

أطاف بغمْرٍ في الخلاعةِ يافعِ

the demon of desire grew twice as strong, as though

it had beset a youthful novice in wantonness.
