يُشْرقُshines النَّاديthe assembly إذاwhen حَلَّhe arrives بهِin it
مثلَماjust as يَشْرَقُchokes منهُbecause of him المُحْتَرِبْthe combatant
The assembly shines when he arrives there,
The club shines when he arrives
just as the combatant chokes because of him.
Like the glow of dawn from it
يَتَجلَّىbecomes manifest النَّقْعُthe battle-dust والفقْرُand poverty إذاwhen
صرَّحَbecomes manifest الشَّرَّانِthe two evils جَدْبdrought ورهَبْand dread
Battle-dust and poverty become manifest when
Poverty and misery appear when
the two evils declare themselves: drought and dread.
The arteries of plenty and blessing run dry
فاللُّهىso the largesse والهَامُand heads منْfrom راحَتِهِhis palm

Thus largesse and heads from his palm,
Inspiration and passion from his comfort
through bounty and battle-might, are scattered and snatched up.
Are scattered drops of dew and power
يمْلأُfills اليومينِthe two days سَلْماًpeace وَوَغىًand battle
شَرَفُSharaf (honor of) الدينal-Din (the faith) نَوالاًbounty وعَطَبْand destruction
Both days—peace and battle—are filled
He fills the days with peace and turmoil
by Sharaf al-Din with bounty and destruction.
The nobility of faith, bounty and peril
فهوso he is مُحْييthe reviver of كُلَّevery حَظٍّfortune هامِدٍdormant
وهوand he is قَتَّالُthe slayer of الأعاديenemies والسَّغَبْand hunger
So he revives every dormant fortune,
He brings life to every fading fortune
and he is the slayer of enemies and hunger.
And kills the enemies and the insolent

منbecause of تَحرِّيهhis scrupulous care رِضاهُhis pleasure والغَضَبْand anger
He is just; alike in his fair judgment,
Just, even-handed in his judgments
through his scrupulous care, are his pleasure and anger.
Seeking his pleasure and anger alike

No decisive verdict of his can be overturned
He does not deny justice in his rulings
by a litigant's eloquence or excessive clamor.
Neither the adversary’s tongue nor the excess of rage

Rather, Abu Ja'far and truth together
Rather, Abu Ja'far and truth together
are true brothers; so whatever he says is binding.
Are brothers in honesty, so his word holds

وهوand he is فيin العزْمِresolve حُسامٌa keen sword ذوbearing شُطَبblade grooves
A mountain of weighty forbearance when he sits with knees drawn up,
A lofty patience when he takes cover
and in resolve he is a keen sword with a grooved blade.
And in resolve, a sword with a sharp edge

فإذاthen when أمْكَنَهُis within his grasp النَّصْرُvictory وَهَبْgives freely
He heaps fearsome face-to-face combat upon his rival;
He widens the spear in wondrous battle
then, when victory is within his grasp, he gives freely.
And when victory enables him, he bestows

And he gallops hard in pursuit of eminence,
He travels the rugged road to supremacy
and deems the canter a disgrace, and the trot as well.
And sees favoritism as disgrace and trickery
عاجلُswift to provide الزَّادprovisions إذاwhen عَزَّis scarce القِرىguest-fare
صادقُtrue الجودِgenerosity إذاwhen الرَّعدُthe thunder كذَبْlies
Swift with provisions when guest-fare is scarce,
Quick to provide when villages grow scarce
true in generosity when the thunder lies.
Honest in generosity when thunder lies

Bright of face, his cheerfulness radiant,
Radiant, glowing face, good tidings his message
he has won glory through effort and lineage.
He attained glory by effort and lineage

So he is water whose drinking-place is pleasant,
He is good, pure water, his source
whose pool is clear and whose approach is safe.
Smooth, delicious, trustworthy and kind

Or like pouring rain from a laden cloud:
Or like heavy rain from an abundant cloud
its lightning of cheer was sighted, and then it poured.
The lightning of good news flashed from it and poured
