    نلت العلى وبنو الآمال في سهر

    Take what you will from the days, or leave it be;

    You have attained the heights while the sons of hope lie sleepless.

    Your excellence has undone many a man deluded by a saying,

    When he pursued it; the worst death lies in reckless risk.

    Let no rabble of enviers provoke you,

    Patient under humiliation, ever drinking muddy water.

    Driven away from the doors, they are hurled

    By the hands of protocol, like an arrow shot by the bowstring.

    They rush headlong toward a meager bounty,

    And in pursuit of high honors, theirs is the charge of asses.

    ما حال إِبليس في التخليد كالخِيرَ

    If they share with me in verse, it is no wonder;

    Iblis's lot in immortality is not like the virtuous one's.

    I contend with the tyrant king for his cushion,

    While they are barred from greeting him or seeing him.

    As though I were giving what I came to seek,

    Before kings, so great are my dignity and standing.

    لو كان ذلك زأر الأسْدِ لم يَضِرِ

    The edifices were raised while the clan's dogs barked;

    Had that been lions' roaring, it would have done no harm.

    Each of them cloaked in abasement, downtrodden,

    Eking out life between humiliation and constraint.

    وربما ضلَّ ساري الليل بالقمر

    The light of my excellence led him astray from his aims;

    And sometimes a night traveler goes astray by the moon.

    They complained of my harsh character, so I told them:

    The roughness of white swords distinguishes them from brown spears.

    فمُزَّة الخمر أشهاها إلى البشر

    Do not think harshness of character a shortcoming;

    For tart wine is the most pleasing kind to humankind.

    It is ignorance enough for my envier that he is a man

    Who defies God's decree and destiny.

    أغنى شباه عن الصَّمصامة الذَّكر

    Indeed, I chose a keen sword of pleasing sheen;

    Its edges leave no need for the hard-tempered Samsamah.

    I forged it from patience that does not fail,

    And the pure substance of forbearance, splendid in effect.

    So, where the swords of India glance off, it emerged

    With an edge skilled in slaying the insolent slanderer.

    Nothing is more deadly than forbearance mingled

    With pride that looks askance through a scorner's eyes.

    Because of it, the clan's fool would rather be struck

    On both sides of his neck by keen swords than endure humiliation.

    If you see me as a blade with no warrior to wield it,

    Kept at rest from striking skulls and throats,

    The scabbard shields it from revealing its sheen,

    As noblewomen are guarded by mantles and veils.

    For every night ends in morning,

    Though its beginning lies far from the predawn hour.

    And I shall assail them at dawn with a sweeping raid that guarantees

    What I seek—or else I am not of Mudar.

    I say to the riders sweeping across a far-flung

    Trackless wilderness, harsh to male ostriches and pale gazelles,

    Hunched upon their camel-saddles, they are overpowered

    At the reins by the hands of sleep and thought.

    As though wine and yellow wars-dye lay in their saddlebags,

    From the gushing and the riders' shaking of their bridle-straps:

    If you seek a life of ease whose reprover sleeps,

    Then turn your mounts back toward Nazar.
