فياso, O قربُnearness ماwhat بينيbetween me وبينَand between المطالبthe goals
Take my pledge of protection as provision for what lies ahead.
Take from my reins the means for the consequences,
How near I am to the things I seek!
Oh how near I am between my aspirations and demands,
لَوانيput me off زمانيmy time بالمرامover my desire وربماand often
I demanded my due from it بالمرهفاتwith finely honed swords القواضِبِthe cleaving ones
Time has delayed granting my desire; yet often
My determination has made my time capricious, and perhaps
I have demanded my due from it with keen, cleaving swords.
I have made deals with it using well-aimed arrows,

At a time when I drove youthful passion away from love,
When I resisted the blowing winds in my youth,
as mounts are driven from sweet watering places,
Increasing the distance from the torment of watering places,
وأعرضتand I turned away عنfrom وصلunion with الخريدةthe maiden والهوىand desire

and turned from union with the maiden, while desire
And turned away from the union of loves and passions,
obeyed me as a docile mount obeys a rider.
It yielded to me the yielding of the compliant to their rider,

And with the ways of gray-haired age I tamed youth,
And I accepted in my youth the morals of old age,
rebellious, yielding to no one who tugs at it [verb unclear].
Disobeying, unrestful, not calmed for the puller,

Noble maidens of resolve, not surrendered to a suppliant,
Resolute intentions that cannot be attained by a contender,
and secrets of prudence, not divulged to a trifler.
And careful secrets that are not disclosed to a player,

And God be praised for one flung into a wilderness [wording unclear],
By God what is destined for you of ordeals,
who found honor sweeter than union with full-breasted maidens.
The view of honor is sweeter than the union of beauties,

Did my spending the night in poverty deceive my enemies?
The enemies are deceived that I have become decreasing
And often, having nothing has helped a man leap.
While many privations were aids for the jumper,

Have patience, all of you: I am rich in glory,
Slow down, I am wealthy in glory,
even if my saddlebags are empty of the gains you have made.
And though my bags are empty of what you wished from me,

Is wealth anything but a servant to a young man's desire?
Isn’t money but a servant to the youth’s desires
And does desire do anything but bring deadly perils?
And isn’t desire except for bringing the sought,

So seek from it only enough to meet a need;
So do not seek from it but to fill a gap,
and if anything is left over, let it be for gifts.
And if there is more let it be for the gifts,

I grew bleary-eyed from constant night journeys into every crisis,
I disliked being informed about every incident,
and had no kohl but the dust of marching hosts.
And no kohl but from the dust of processions,

So do not warm yourselves at it: it is Darimite,
Do not think it demolishable, for it is solid,
its hearths the heads of mighty kings.
Its flames are the perplexity of victorious kings,

I will ignite it red, its sparks pouring down,
on the plain's edge as grasshoppers leap,
Upon the flank of the land like the descent of locusts,

He fights, delighted with what he will attain,
He fights happily with what he comprehends,
so his cheerfulness makes you think he is not fighting.
Deeming him to humans as not a warrior,

The gashes of his wounds pour blood,
a torrent, though the gullies' flood has not yet come.
Coming and going without the flow stopping,

If flashing lightning deceives one watching for rain,
If the shining lightning lies to the blamer,
the lightning of its blade-edges is true, not false.
Then the lightning of their weapons is truthful, not lying,

Crimson blood pours onto the earth like a downpour,
The neighing of pouring rain rages upon the ground,
and rising dust heaps up like clouds.
And the swelling of a torrent like the accumulation of clouds,

Horsemen spent the night resolved, and dawn found them
Horsemen who gathered at night and awoke
with knotted horsehair marking their firmly bound resolve.
With the knots of opinion like knots of plaited hair,

When they point their spears for stabbing, their thrusts
full moons racing one another in pursuit of stars,
Shot them like stars seeking planets,

lions who, when the army kindles its blaze,
Lions, when the ominous Thursday roared,
spill the lifeblood of lions over foxes.
They asked the souls above the foxes,

And the men's struggle lasted long, until they collided
So the people's struggle prolonged until they collided
on a broad road of fallen heads.
Upon traditions of the piercing insanity of the madly in love,

So the length and heat of the pursuit drove them
So the length of the chase and its heat pushed them
to tread on the rear of outlying dwellings.

But the stabbing was not between the shoulders of the brave
champions, not among slave women gathering firewood.
Nor between the slave girls' breasts,

And safe was he who did not ride the sword around his neck
on the morning when battle proved a hard mount.
The morning the ordeal was seen to be of arduous riding,

And a band of riders: their pale camels, whenever roused, seem
A riding as if the stallions were enraged when they rose
to match the swift gaits of the east and south winds.
Competing with the necks of the horses and oxen,

If you conceal a night, its morning reveals them
by its morning amid wishes and desires.
Between wishes and destinations,
