Sorrow refused to haunt my breast, and my defender

against sorrow is a breast no other breast has ever matched.

And time's vicissitudes shrank humbled from me; my protection

rests in the valor of a vizier in whom Time takes pride.

from Ibn ʿUbayd Allāh is a vast army of glories.

    يظلُّ بها نشْوانَ والكَرمُ الخمر

    Swift in hospitality, he bears generous ardor in his bosom;

through it he stays intoxicated, and generosity is the wine.

When he showers the land of bounty-seekers with his generosity

and his favors, drought dies and poverty is routed.

In the assembly his knee-wraps are tied around a man of sound judgment,

forbearing, with pardon in every grave affair.

It is as though tales of the vizier and mention of him

were plant-beds in upland meadows, visited at dawn by rain.
