يوم الفخار على الحيا والمِقْصل
Salute majesty and generosity: both have surpassed
The awe and dew have clothed
On glory’s day, the rain and the keen-edged sword.
The day of pride over life and sword

Both united in a noble-hearted man among men; his gaze
A group with valor among men, their glance
In pursuit of lofty honor is a falcon’s gaze.
Is the glance of the sublime hunting the gazelles

Praise of him and his glory have filled the lands,
His praise and pride spread through the countries
And his abode among them is in the land of Mosul.
And his abode among them in the land of Mosul

Kings envied his station, and so they climbed
The kings envied his abode, so they ascended
To a summit that, but for him, would not have been scaled.
To a peak, which without him would not be climbed

And when they listened closely to reports of him,
When they listened to the news of him
The unjust man acted justly, and every reputed miser gave freely.
The unjust turned just, and the miserly became generous

And lavishes favors even when he is not asked.
And bestows blessings without even being asked

مُستهترٍ بالمكرمات مُعذَّلِ
He is shrewd; his sword-belt hangs upon one much praised,
A fire, if angered
Passionately devoted to noble deeds, often reproached.

He is fire when indignation rouses him,
So the protector of al-Din kept away harm
And when pleased, the coolness of sweet, flowing water.

Subduing the shields and mail coats, his might
By the Lord of time, for time’s longest span.

The worries dispersed like the wings of a long night
So through you he settled into a lush, moist spring.
