Offer what excuses you can for my panegyrics.

I shall wash poetry's grime from myself with noble deeds.

You thought it a disgrace for a man of fierce honor,

Who long threatened the people with a vast army.

You spoke truly; but no precious blessing is won

In life except under hardship's humiliation.

I greeted my age in the morning, overlooking its sins,

Until the time when the sword could exact revenge.

And in the injustice of calamities I saw a straightener

Of my spear, though you imagined it intent on breaking it.

So I was like musk, releasing fragrance when crushed,

Even though the stone pestle's blow scattered its fragments.

Sons of Darim, [if you do not] raid, then exchange

Your turbans on battle's day for women's veils.

    لا سلمتْ أفحوصةٌ لفتىً حُرِّ

    For villages and cities have been seized for slaves;

May no bird's nesting hollow be spared for a freeborn youth!

You tethered your fine steeds to the tents' guy ropes,

While the enemy's horses gallop in every battle.

When you kindle the fire of a war whose fuel is

The points of keen white swords and brown spears,

I pledge to you that you will bring them back acclaimed,

Galloping after the terror with herds of red camels.

I am the man who aims at his hopes without servility,

Nor do I gain safety except from terror.

I do not visit the ignoble clan by night to praise it,

Even if the harshness of dust-gray famines stripped me to the bone.

I made myself independent of the miser's wealth, because I

Saw wealth with humiliation as a kind of poverty.

A life of want, beneath which lies death's fury,

And the dignity of contentment above the dominion of the sons of al-Nadr.

I endured; long endurance is honor and humiliation,

And this is the time when patience is praised through victory.

I shall surely storm the clan whose precinct is impregnable,

With a sweeping raid that gathers fugitive glory and pride,

With sideways spear-thrusts that rob the spear of its point,

When what lies between the chest-bone and the breast is shattered.

It has low-hanging clouds of pursuit's dust,

And rain upon rain from the blood of heroes.

As though the men's fresh blood, at the spear's sweep,

Were clouds of a rain-pouring sky, or Badr's bounty.
