نصراً ومَنْ أنجدتُما لم يُخْذَلِ
O sharp swords and slender spears!
O swords and spears with bent tips,
Grant aid: whoever you two have helped is never forsaken.
Victory and whoever you have supported will not be failed.

جادَ الزمانُ وبالعُلى لم يبْخلِ
If you two wished, with one will matched by another,
Had you willed with a will conforming to the Divine Will,
Time would be generous and would not withhold high rank.
Time would have been generous and would not have been miserly with the high positions.

لحمى الوضيعِ ونُصرة المُسترذل
You two have blighted my honor, while the shade of your protection
You have debased my honor and the protection of both of you,
shelters the lowly and supports the despised.
To defend the ignoble and help the despised one.

You two defied me in my aim and said,
And you disobeyed me in my affairs and said:
"Tamim has vanished, so protection is set aside."
Tamim learned and the light cavalry is isolated.

How many a reign has passed! Take heed of a resolve
How many kings have departed, so be determined
by which the later man surpassed the earlier man's station.
and the last of them in it will surpass the status of the first.

So claim your glory, O Mujashiʿ, and know
So suffice with your pride, O compliant one, and know
that, for you, I stand amid a mighty host formed of my resolve.
That for you from my determination I am in the army formation.

ووغىً أصولُ بصارمي وبمقْولي
I am the knight of both days: the day of speech
I am the brave knight of the days of plea
and of battle; I charge with my sword and my tongue.
and clamor that I establish with my sword and my saying.

مُسْتأصَلانِ بمعْركٍ وبمُشكلِ
The scholar and the armored warrior alike
Indeed, ink and the prolific man both
are uprooted in battle and in a difficult question.
Are rooted out by battle and crisis.

مَهْلاً فانَّ عزائمي لم تَرْحَلِ
Youth departed, and they said, "High rank has eluded him."
Youth has departed so it was said that eminence missed it.
Wait: my resolutions have not departed.
Slow down, for my determination has not departed.

My gray hair and my youth are alike in dignity;
Both my old age and youth are equally in veneration,
so too in attaining every hope.
For that is how it is in achieving every hopeful one.

The night was above disgrace, so I did not pass it
Nobility denied what would disgrace me so I did not spend the night
fearing the tale-bearing morning to come.
In fear of the advent of the coming dawn.

If I have gained from Time, I am a fleet steed,
So if I gained a swimmer from fate I am
racing for the glory of coming first, wholly intent.
A custodian racing with the pride of the first entrusted one.

And if I grow weary, I am a sword of luster,
And if I aimed then a sword with luster
whose fine metal is hidden for want of a polisher.
Its gems were hidden for lack of polishing.

If I am unrecognized, and something other than my poetry portrays me,
And if I am unknown and others describe my poetry
my fault is that I am prudent and have not acted foolishly.
Then the fault is that I am determined and have not shown ignorance.

Why have kings scaled its summits,
Why have the kings assumed its lofty positions
while I have sunk to the bottom of the lowest depths?
While I remained in the depth of the lowest abyss?

If the claim is valor, there are the battlefields and warfare;
If it was about courage then wars and clamor
or if merit, it is the right of the most meritorious.
Or if it was about merit then it is the right of the most meritorious.

Tongues have wronged my virtues, just as
My merits were wronged just as
they wronged Jamal al-Din, refuge of the needy.
The beauty of Jamal al-Din was wronged, the shelter of the wretched one.

They praised him to encompass the virtues of his soul,
They praised him so they could include the virtues of his soul
but his virtues overflowed, pouring forth praises from on high.
So it overflowed with praise as the water skin overflows.

So I came to offer what I could; whoever would seek
So I have come to give what I could, and there is no shame
to carry the vast sea into a waterskin will be ashamed.
In moving dregs to the place of sale.

A sun of beneficence, whose light has spread everywhere,
A sun whose light has spread to be an argument
rather, a sign come as proof for a messenger.
Rather a clear verse has come as evidence from the Sender.

Its miracle is its lack of any equal, and a restraint
Its inimitability is the lack of an equal, and a gentleness
that [apparently] checked the fingers of the bountiful giver.
That sufficed the builder, the prolonger.

People are either men of bounty whose good fortune
So people vary between the generosity of my brother Nada's success
is distant, or others deemed miserly in giving.
A storyteller, and another one being stingy in gifting.

But Muhammad's good fortune and his bounty
Muhammad's success and generosity
race each other toward the impoverished and penniless.
Both compete to the drawn sword.

يُعطي الجزيلَ لسائلي معروفهِ

يجودُ بالنُّعْمى إذا لم يُسْألِ
He gives lavishly to those who ask his kindness;
He gives generously to those asking his favors
he grants blessings when no one asks.
He is charitable with blessings even if he is not asked.

The scowling of misfortunes increases his cheerfulness,
And the difficulties of life increase his composure
so he is seen smiling most in dire difficulty.
So he becomes the most cheerful face in predicaments.

If his petitioners stripped him in the dark green of night
If the darkness of night masked him
of the single garment that enfolded him,
It would not contain him like one showing favor.

Neither severe poverty changed his face
no regret, even if winter came with shivering fits.
Nor did winter come to him with clenched teeth.

Necks are weighed down by the favors of his bounty,
Necks weighed down by the blessings of his dew
so heads bow to the one who has burdened them.
So the mind is burdened by that weight.

Captives of the minister's kindness, all of them
The captives of the minister's favors, all of them
are prisoners: you see each free, yet as one in chains.
A helper you see him as though shackled.

From Samarkand to Tihama a witness

To the superiority of beauty over the fox with wagging tail.

Flowing while his abode is in Mosul.

Reviver of his law and place of descent,

So it is as if it became fertile by his gifts
a town on the bank of the sweet-flowing Euphrates.
A land on the coast of the chained Euphrates.

O Muhammad! Indeed, I have called upon one much praised;
Of success are a fair, generous call.
and calling on a generous benefactor is a means to success.
This is the time and these are the opportunities of eminence

وأنا المُشارُ وما بدا لكَ فافْعَلِ
This is the age, and these are the chances for high rank;
And I am the one pointing, so do what seems best.
and I am the one singled out: do whatever seems good to you.
