O Abu al-Fawaris, the days bear witness:

You are the generous one when the steady rains grow scarce.

    أبى لي المجدُ والعلياءُ والهِممُ

    I have never praised a friend who lacked honor;

Glory, eminence, and high aspirations have forbidden me that.

Fear and drought are both routed by you when

Victory’s might and generosity flow through your hand.

So wherever you are in any land, no fear

Terrifies a neighbor who draws near it, nor does poverty.

From your hand, at all times, in drought and battle,

Pouring bounty and blood are never held back.

When you enter battle, fearsome and terrifying,

The men’s heads and crowns give way before you.

So the adversary’s head falls before the blow,

And the champion’s life is cut short before the thrust.

You forged your sword from resolve granted especially to you,

And your spear’s forepart from judgment that holds sway.

Thus it cuts, while the swords of India glance off,

And it pierces, while the necks of fierce warriors snap.

And who is like Husam al-Din amid battle dust,

While armor is pierced and Khatti spears splinter?

Bright of countenance, while the sun’s face is eclipsed,

The swords weep blood while he smiles.

Gentle in character, no weariness in his affection

Drives companions away, nor is there boredom in his nature.

A consuming fire of wrath for enemies,

And a watering place of bounty whose water is cool.

    Tamim praises him—the people known

To Kinana’s noblest as the possessors of glory.
