وماand not هوit اِلاexcept الدَّارميُّDārimī المُبَرِّحُagonizing
My passion for his glory is thought to be ʿUdhrī love,
He thinks my passion and ardour glorify him,
Yet it is nothing but agonizing Dārimī love.
Yet he is but a fickle and unfaithful one.

And I am thought a panegyrist, yet it is as though I
And he assumes I praise him, while in truth
Were glorifying God through my truthful praise of al-Zaynabī.
I extol the sincerity of Zainab's eulogy.
مكارمُهhis generous deeds أدنىnearer منthan الغيثِrain للغِنىto wealth
وغرَّتُهand his radiant brow منthan رونقِsplendor of الصُّبحdawn أوضحُbrighter
His generosity brings wealth nearer than rain does,
His virtues fall short of rain for the needy,
And his radiant brow is brighter than the splendor of dawn.
And his pride is less radiant than the dawn.
يَعافُhe abhors اِباءًout of self-respect فيهin himself أدْنىthe slightest خَسيفَةٍbaseness
ويغتفرُand he forgives الجرمَthe offense الجليلَgrave ويصفحُand he pardons
Out of self-respect, he abhors the slightest baseness in himself,
He pardons the slightest offense from a father,
Yet he forgives grave wrongdoing and pardons.
And forgives the greatest sins with restraint.
وتهتزُّand sway عِطفاهhis two sides لاِحدوثةِat a tale of العُلىglory
كماjust as مالleaned للكأسtoward the cup النَّزيفُthe drunkard المُرنَّحُreeling
And his sides sway at a tale of glory,
His sympathy trembles for the plight of the noble,
As a reeling drunkard leans toward the cup.
As a dripping cup tilts towards the inclined.
اذاif طاشتlost their balance الأحلامُminds يوماًone day فحلْمُهthen his forbearance
منthan الأوراقthe gray mountain (reading uncertain) العاديancient ذيpossessing النِّيقthe lofty peak أرجحُweightier
If ever minds lose their balance, his forbearance
If dreams rage one day, his composure
Is weightier than the ancient gray mountain with its lofty peak.
Is sounder than the elegant, graceful boughs.
واِنand if ضاقgrew constricted قلبٌa heart بالصغيرةat a petty offense لامرىءٍof a man
فقلبُthen the heart of عليًّʿAlī بالكبيرةِfor a grave offense أفْسَحُmore spacious
And if a man's heart cannot bear a petty offense,
And if a heart tightens with a trivial issue,
Then ʿAlī's heart has greater room for a grave one.
Ali's heart is more spacious with the major.
