تطاولَ حتى ما تُنالُ فوارعُهْ
May God preserve the glory in Lu'ayy ibn Ghalib,
Allah has nurtured glory in Lu'ayy bin Ghalib
which towered until its summits could not be reached.
His nobility reaches heights none can attain

ولابن طِرادٍ كُلُّهُ وجَوامعهْ
Its scattered portions spread among proud, noble chiefs,
The generous parted in the hunt scattered about
while Ibn Tirad has it all, its gathered fullness.
While everything of Ibn Tiraad's is brought together

Radiant and broad-chested: as for censure,
Broad is his generous chest if blamed
he defies it; as for his generosity, he obeys it.
Disobedient, and if generous, obedient

The radiance of his face lights the darkness of night,
The brightness of his face illuminates the dark night
yet his battles grow dark with his spear-charges.
And from it aspects of generosity are dimmed

And ravaging calamities draw forth his bounty, as though
His streaming generosity passes like
his hindrances supported him in noble deeds.
Impediments vying to honor him

And who is like the vizier al-Zaynabi, when the spears—
And one like the minister Zainabbi when the spears
their leveled shafts—shatter amid throats?
Collided between the throats on its streets

قديماً وأطْواقُ الرِّقابِ صنائعُهْ
A youth whose gifts are the heads of the sons of high honor,
A youth whom the children of the noble turn to
from of old, and whose favors are collars around necks.
Since long ago, and necks are the artifacts of his nobility

Deeply versed in the secrets of hearts, as though
Knowledgeable of the secrets of hearts as if
his deliberation were his scouts in hidden matters.
His intimates in the unknown are his scouts

His gifts are bound, in the assembly, to a noble man,
His talents are attributed to the excellent
whose qualities are graceful, whose lavish gifts are immense.
His meanings subtle, his overflowing talents coarse

Poison to enemies, bitter to the taste,
Firm against enemies, bitter is his taste
and cool refreshment to seekers of bounty, his watering places sweet.
And coolness for intimates, pleasant are his ways
