May death and blame pass you by! How many an eloquent verse

in praise of you wanders within my breast!

    لها في قلوب الفاضلينَ قبولُ

    I shall send it forth, ʿArrār, in every gathering;

it finds acceptance in the hearts of the virtuous.

Its recitation makes seekers of glory sway,

as wine has set noble drinkers swaying.

So if I have not said, 'I have spoken of the greatness in you,'

then, with God's help, I shall say it.

You won over the wanderer in me and made me once more

a companion; the believers' shade is deeply sheltering.

My abode grew barren through calamities, yet I did not care,

while your hand is an evening thundercloud, pouring rain.

How many a man lives long through your bounty,

and how many lie slain through your might, their blood unavenged!

Gold rusts with time, growing sullied,

but your honor's surface gleams, polished bright.

So take as much of my verse as you can, for it

will endure [reading uncertain], while base speech passes away.

Spare no effort in choosing me, for I am

ready to shoulder kings' duties [reading uncertain], and answer for them.
