عِشْتَmay you live قُطبQutb (pole) الدينal-Din (of the faith) هطَّالpouring abundantly النَّدىbounty; dew
باذِلَlavishing المَعْروفِkindness مَنَّاعَstaunchly defending الحِمىthe protected domain
Long may you live, Qutb al-Din, showering bounty,
You have lived as the pillar of the faith, showering blessings,
lavishing kindness, staunchly guarding your domain,
Giving freely, defending the sacred,
هاطِلَpouring forth الكَفَّينِboth hands سَلْماًin peace ووَغىًand in war
حيثُماwherever كُنتَyou are نَوالاًbounty ودَماand blood
both hands pouring forth in peace and war,
Striking with your hands whether in peace or war,
wherever you are, bounty and blood.
Wherever you were, providing plentifully.
تكشِفُyou dispel اللَّيْلَينِthe two nights منْof نَقعِهماtheir dust
عِثْيراًswirling dust جَوْناًblack ونَقْعاًand battle-dust أقْتَماdusky
You dispel the two nights of their dust—
You reveal the two darkest nights with your brilliance,
black, swirling dust and dusky battle-dust.
A glowing full moon dispelling the gloom.
فلقدfor indeed فُقْتَyou surpassed الغَواديthe morning rain-clouds حُفَّلاًladen with rain
وفضلتَand you outdid السَّيفَthe sword عَضباًkeen-edged مِخْدَماcleaving
For you have surpassed the rain-laden morning clouds,
You have surpassed the valiant warriors, honorable and courageous,
and outdone the keen-edged, cleaving sword.
Preferring the sword, lethal when unsheathed.
يعْرضُpresents itself العارُdisgrace فتَلْويso you turn aside مُعْرِضاًturning away
وتَرىand you see المجْدَglory فتمضيso you press on قُدُماstraight ahead
Disgrace presents itself; you turn aside, shunning it,
Shame turns its face from you,
and when you see glory, you press straight ahead.
While glory walks on before you.
وإذاand when رُحْتَyou set out مُبيداًa destroyer للْعِدىof the foes
عُدْتَyou return كَرَّاراًcharging repeatedly تُبيدُyou eradicate الإِزَماfamines
And when you set out to destroy your foes,
When you set out to destroy the enemy host,
you return, charging anew, to banish famines.
You return again and again to decimate their forces.
لمnot تَزَلْyou have ceased تُعْطيyou give عَطاءًbounty رابِحاًenriching
سابِغاًabundant حتىuntil عَدِمتَyou lacked العَدماwant; poverty
You have never ceased to give enriching bounty,
You have always given generously, profitably,
abundant, until you lacked want itself.
Fulfilling every need, till needs existed no more.
وإذاand when خَيْلُكَyour horses أظْماهاmakes them thirsty الوَغىbattle
طَوَتِthey pass up الوِرْدَthe drinking-water النَّميرَsweet; pure الشَّبِماcold
And when battle makes your horses thirsty,
When the fury of battle plunges your steeds into the fray,
they pass up the sweet, cold drinking-water,
They grind the blossoms with their fierce charge.
فورَدْنَso they come to drink الغَمْرَthe deep flood منfrom نبْعِthe spring الطُّلىthe necks
قانياًcrimson ثُمَّthen رَعَيْنَthey graze اللِّمَماthe locks of hair
so they drink the deep flood welling from necks,
Then they arrive at the field of combat, eager from the pool of courage,
crimson, then graze on locks of hair.
Quenching their thirst before tasting the blood of the slain.
فهنَاكَthen there العيدُthe festival بلrather أمْثالُهُothers like it
سَرْمَداًforever ماas long as نَقَعَquenches الماءُwater الظَّماthirst
Then there is the festival—rather, many like it—
There the feast lasts forever, and more feasts besides,
forever, as long as water quenches thirst.
As long as water continues to flow in the river bed.
