Leave behind you the words of wicked tale-bearers,

And behold the states of overpowering love.

    ولولا الهوى لم انْتدبْ للمعاذرِ

    But for your fondness for rejection, they would not have striven;

And but for love, I would not have set about making excuses.

My sleep turned away because you deserted me, though often

It was tranquil, with eyelid and eye at peace, when you drew near.

Those pledges have indeed ended, as though they were

Fleeing birds startled by lions lurking in their lairs.

No dream-phantom appears to the wounded eye,

Nor does the beloved visit the tormented heart.

One bitten by longing, tainted by a liar,

    And the peace of a visit, shaken by one who forsakes;

And a weeper who, when the year turns barren around him,

Waters the dust with showers from his eyelids.

You listened; yet had you lent my yearning an ear,

Every scoundrel would have been driven back on his heels.

And you burdened me with the liar’s guilt; still

Misfortune’s hand bloodies a walker who has not stumbled.

I defied the prince of reproach for your sake, though often

He assailed my ears again and again, clamoring with rebukes.

Whenever I count the kinds of your rejection, and

Their first have become joined by their last,

A love that never sobers erases them, as are effaced

By Jalā al-Dīn’s forbearance the gravest offenses.

When a wrongdoer comes to him while he has power,

His forgiveness makes you think him powerless.
