من بأسه المرهفات البيض والأسلُ
Knowledge is what teaches lofty honor, and lends
I gained knowledge from the scholars and acquired
Its might to the keen white blades and spears;
From its might, swords white as lightning and sharp blades.

أو وصْف غانيةٍ في ودِّها مَللُ
Not something licentious or dissolute, held in contempt,
I am no despicable rogue to be belittled,
Nor the description of a beauty whose love is wearisome.
Nor the depiction of a bored paramour.

ظلماً فسيانُ عندي الغزْل والغزَل
So do not demand love poetry of me, debasing my honor
So name me not a man who lowers his honor,
Unjustly; for spinning and love verse are alike to me.
For to me, serious and light verse are the same.
