هنيئاًjoy للمَناقِبِto noble virtues والمَعاليand lofty honors
إذاwhen عُدَّare counted المكارِمُnoble deeds والكِرامُand noble men
Joy to noble virtues and lofty honors,
Congratulations to virtues and nobility
when noble deeds and noble men are counted,
When generosity and magnanimity are counted
بَقاءُcontinued life أغَرَّof a radiant man تَحْسُدُenvy حالَتَيْهِhis two states
وفَضْلَهُماand the excellence of both الصَّوارِمُkeen swords والغَمامُand rainclouds
for the enduring life of a radiant man whose two aspects
The permanence of his two conditions is envied
and their excellence keen swords and rainclouds envy.
As are his valor and clouds
فعِنْدَso in البَاسِbattle هنْديٌّan Indian sword جُرازٌkeen-cutting
وعندَand in الجودِgenerosity هَطَّالٌrain-pouring رُكامُa massed cloud
So in battle, he is a cleaving Indian sword;
In valor, he is a fierce Indian
and in generosity, a massed cloud pouring rain.
In generosity, a pouring rain
إِمامُan imam هُدىًof guidance أضاءَlit up لناfor us الدَّياجيthe dark nights
فلاso no ظُلْمٌinjustice يُلِمُّbefalls ولاnor ظَلامُdarkness
An imam of guidance, he has lit our dark nights,
A guiding imam who illuminated for us
so neither injustice nor darkness comes upon us.
So there is no oppressive darkness
وكيفand how تُخَصُّis confined تهْنئَةٌcongratulation بشَهْرٍto a month
وكُلُّand all زَمانِهِhis time الشَّهْرُthe month الحَرامُsacred
And how can congratulations be confined to a month,
How can congratulations be for a single month
when all his time is the sacred month?
When his every era is the sacred month
يَخافُfears اللّهَGod فيin كُلِّall المَساعيendeavors
فلاso no حُوبٌsin يَشينُdisgraces ولاnor أثامُguilt
He fears God in every undertaking,
He fears God in all his affairs
so neither sin nor guilt mars him.
So there is no shame or sins
ويحْلُمُand is forbearing والجَرائمُthough the crimes فادِحاتٌgrievous
ويَسْهَرُand keeps vigil إذْwhile رَعِيَّتُهُhis subjects نِيامُasleep
And he is forbearing though the crimes are grievous,
He is forbearing though crimes are flagrant
and keeps vigil while his subjects sleep.
And vigilant while his subjects sleep
ويخْشىand fears الجَوْرَtyranny سَطوتَهُhis onslaught عليهagainst it
كماjust as يخْشىfears مِنfrom الصَّقْرِthe falcon الحَمامُdoves
And tyranny fears his onslaught against it,
He fears injustice and its tyranny over him
as doves fear the falcon.
As a pigeon fears the falcon
أبادَeradicated الظُّلْمَinjustice والإِمْلاقَand destitution حتىuntil
لِكُلٍّfor each منْof مَناقِبهِhis virtues انْتِقامُvengeance
He eradicated injustice and destitution, until
He eradicated injustice and oppression until
each of his virtues had its vengeance.
Each of his virtues took revenge
فطعْنso the thrust الجودof generosity فيagainst الإِملاقِdestitution شَزْرٌsidelong
وضَربُand the blow العدلِof justice فيagainst الجورtyranny التِهامdevouring
So generosity thrusts sidelong at destitution,
Criticizing stinginess is a piercing arrow
and justice strikes at tyranny, devouring it.
And striking injustice is a consuming flame
أهانَhe debased المالَwealth حتىuntil باتَbecame يُزْهىfeels proud
علىabove المالِwealth الجَراوِلُthe stones والرَّغامُand dust
He scorned wealth, till proud they grew—
He disgraced money until
above wealth—the stones and the dust.
Coins and dirhams became worthless
ونازَلَهُand fought it مُنازَلَةَas one fights الأعاديenemies
فماتَso died الدَّثْرُabundant wealth والبَطَلُand the champion الهُمامُthe bold-hearted man
And he fought it as one fights enemies;
He confronted it like an enemy
so the vast hoard perished; the champion was the bold-hearted man.
So the rich and the prestigious died
فللأموالِso wealth has فيacross الآفاقِthe horizons شَتٌّscattering
وللحَمْدِand praise has انْتِثارٌscattering وانتِظامُand stringing together
So wealth is scattered across the horizons,
Money everywhere is now dispersed
and praise is strewn and strung together.
While praise is spreading and systematic
وعَمَّand encompassed بلُطْفِwith the gentleness of رأفَتِهِhis compassion الرَّعاياthe subjects
حُنُوَّthe tenderness of الأمِّa mother واحِدُهاher only child غُلامُa boy
And he enfolded his subjects in his gentle compassion,
His kindness extended to all subjects
with the tenderness of a mother whose only child is a boy.
Like a mother's affection for her only son
فكانso he was كَعارضٍlike a raincloud هَتِنٍsteadily raining سَحوحٍpouring abundantly
تَداركَrescued رُفْقَةًa band of travelers وبهاand within it أُوامُburning thirst
So he was like a raincloud, raining steadily and abundantly,
He was like a heavy rain cloud
that rescued a band of travelers burning with thirst.
Coming to the aid of a drought-stricken land
فغَدَّرَتِso it filled with pools الفَلاةُthe wilderness وزادَand increased حتىuntil
تَغمَّرَتِwere submerged الرَّوابيthe hills والإِكامُand hillocks
So the wilderness filled with pools, and the waters rose until
The wasteland betrayed and increased until
the hills and hillocks were submerged.
The meadows and dunes were flooded
وأصبَحتِand became الخَوامِسُcamels watered every fifth day عائِماتٍswimming
بذيin an expanse with مَوْجٍwaves للُجَّتِهِits deep waters have التِطامُclashing
And the camels watered every fifth day were now swimming
The stars floated
in a wave-filled expanse whose deep waters clashed.
On waves crashing from his overflowing seas
وأضْحىand became القَفْرُthe wasteland بعدafter المحْلdrought روضاًa meadow
يَميسُsways gracefully بهِin it الخُزامىlavender والثُّمامُand desert bunchgrass
And after drought the wasteland became a meadow,
The desert after the flood became a meadow
where lavender and thumam grass sway gracefully.
Where beetles and birds frolicked
نَوالُthe bounty أغرَّof a radiant man أبْلَجَresplendent مُسْتَضيءٍillumined
يضيقُis too narrow ببعضfor part of مِدْحَتِهِpraise of him الكَلامُspeech
Such is the bounty of a radiant man, resplendent and illumined—
His streaming generosity illuminated
words are too narrow for even part of his praise.
Too boundless for words to contain
فلاso may not عدِمَتْit be deprived of إِمامُthe imam الحَقِّof truth دُنْياthe world
لَهاfor it منهfrom him سُرورٌjoy وابْتِسامُand smiles
So may the world never lose the imam of truth,
When the leader of truth left this world
from whom it has joy and smiles.
It still had from him joy and smiles
