وبَذَّالُ الرَّغائبِ والنَّوالِ
If the generous man is called a giver of gifts
If it is said the generous is brother of gifts
And a lavish bestower of choice gifts and largesse,
And giver of desires and grants

يَصونُ الوجه عن ذُلِّ السُّؤالِ
Then nobler than he is one with a proud, unbowed nose,
Then nobler than him is one with a dignified, refusing nose
Who guards his face from the humiliation of begging.
Who guards face from humiliation of asking
وهلْand is ...? يُلفىis found جَوادٌa generous man مثلَthe equal of حُرٍّa free man

أجَلَّ النَّفْسَ عنْ مِنَنِ الرجال
And can a generous man be found to equal a free man
And can a generous one like a freeman be found
Who has held his soul above the favors of men?
Who values soul above men's favors
