مظفرMuzaffar (the victorious) الدينal-Din (the faith) إنْif فاقَsurpassed الرجالmen فقدthen indeed
فاقsurpassed الجيادthe steeds بيومon the day of الطَّردِthe chase أشْهبهُhis gray steed
If Muzaffar al-Din has surpassed men, then
Muthaffar al-Din, if the men surpass,
His gray steed has surpassed the steeds on the day of the chase.
The steeds have surpassed on the day of hasty departure.

منfrom فرطthe abundance of ماthat which راحhe kept يجريهhe makes it run ويركبُهُand he rides it
It learned to take the lead from his preeminence in noble deeds,
He who taught running in his glories,
From how often he set it running and rode it.
From too much running and riding him.

كأنهas though he بضميرwith the thought of الركضِgalloping يضْربهُhe strikes it
Listening to a passing thought from its rider's inmost mind,
Listening to the whisper of a secret of his horseman,
As though he spurred it with the thought of galloping.
As if with the conscience of running he beats him.

Upon it, distant land draws near as it gallops,
He approaches him from afar fast on earth,
As though its tethering-place, when racing, were its open plain.
As if his tether in pulling him is his forelock.

Yaranqush is like Solomon upon his gray steed,
He sees an inscription like Solomon's on his gray,
When he goes forth, the gentle wind his mount.
When it goes forth and the wind is its vessel.

Since it grew accustomed in war to a dye of blood,
When it was accustomed in war to blood shedding,
In peace, he began to dye it with henna.
It went forth in peace to henna dyeing him.
