I say to a fluent speaker of the tribe, gifted of tongue,

eloquent when the tongues of fierce disputants falter,

who pledges to make good any lapse, without faltering,

if a word strays from the path of speech:

Carry—may God protect you—thanks to him

through whom the standing of noble deeds has grown great and exalted,

to generous ʿAḍud al-Dīn, a son of his own glory,

whose lineage is like the morning sun when it shines forth.

There, then, bounty pours down when the clouds fail their promise,

and there is shelter that protects when bright swords are humbled.

Modest before petitioners, bold before foes,

however large a tally grows, it is small beside his two virtues.

So he disdains both vast masses—wealth and a mighty host—

in giving and in charging forward when the horses flee.

His two tunics are draped on one whose summits soar,

when knee-bands are untied by the fury of calamity.

May he never cease to scale every lofty height

of glory, where even the wind would slip if it flew there.
