I love the postponement of union, not out of contentment with it.

And would a young man's soul accept what burdens it?

Yet in it lie love's life and endurance,

And despair has a state whose newborn does not cry out.

So do not blame my excessive trust in her words,

Even if her promises of meeting have failed me.

For no condition fails to leave a remnant,

And death—utter death—is nothing but her turning away.

And I do fold away the term of the promise between us,

And I distract her from recalling it; I do not bring it up again.

She unjustly denies my claim of love, though between us

Stand witnesses to passion that cannot be denied:

The blaze of sighs whose heat never cools,

And strings of tears whose necklaces never come undone.

May God guard what lies beneath the shirt, for it is

A last remnant of a soul, with nothing left but its existence.
