فقدتُكI lost you فقدthe loss of الشمسthe sun عندat مَضِلَّةٍa place where one loses one's way
فقدتُك فقد الشمس عند مَضِلَّةٍ
فلاso neither المُكثُstaying مأمونٌsafe ولاnor السيرjourneying نافعُuseful
فلا المُكثُ مأمونٌ ولا السير نافعُ
I lost you as one loses the sun when the way is lost;
I lost you like the sun lost in eclipse,
so neither staying is safe nor journeying of any use.
Neither staying is safe, nor traveling avails,
وأمَّلْتُand I hoped عودthe return of الصبحthe dawn منكfrom you بلقْيةٍthrough a meeting
وأمَّلْتُ عود الصبح منك بلقْيةٍ
وصبحكand your dawn قدalready سُدَّتْwere barred عليهagainst it المطالعُthe places of rising
وصبحك قد سُدَّتْ عليه المطالعُ
And I hoped a meeting with you would bring back the dawn,
And I hoped for your morning visit again,
but the horizons had been barred to your dawn.
But your morn has set, and daybreak fails.
