I held myself above praising men, but I was driven

by a return journey, made irresistible by necessity's demands,

on a morning's return from Khurasan, turning back,

wearing down the backs of swift she-camels and exhausting them.

And I gave my verse rest from praising any benefactor,

even if his honor was pure or his earnings noble.

So no praise but for glory and valor,

and none addressed in verse but the king screened from view.

They said, 'Stingy with eulogies, resentful

of his times—how long will he complain and reproach?'

I said to them, while excellence tossed its shoulder,

and within me lay vexation whose darkness inspired dread:

'Why should I proclaim praise when blame is due,

and be content with the days while glory is outraged?'

And honor came from Sanjar and placed me

at the Pleiades' height, while my rivals sank low.

With it I saved eloquence's face, lest she be seen

led as a bride to an unworthy place and courted.

And a bright-faced man, whose excellence Isfahan bestowed,

broad of courtyard, his character more open and spacious—

    I lavished praise on him out of love and closeness;

for he does not withhold bounty, nor do I lie.

And is there a mountain like Yamin al-Din when he sits in council,

steadfast while the turns of time seethe and roar?

And a pouring rain whose drops never cease,

pouring aid upon hardships and bringing gain.

And a lion who, when the armored warrior falters, is driven

by firm resolves, not by a sharp fang and claw.

He strives to the utmost to earn commendation, because he

has seen every gain except praise pass away.

And how many a white hand he freely extended

to me, while the hope-dashing miser held back!

I gave thanks, and his generosity persisted; so whenever

I composed eloquent verse, a downpour from him showered me.

Virtues too exalted to be compared with wine,

    yet sweeter than clear wine.

O Abu Ali, this is the call of an adventurer,

bold when the coward who hangs back is afraid.

Take joy in my affection: it is a resource for you,

mightier than the keen-edged sword and more fearsome.

And never has my heart delighted in you, O perfect in wisdom,

for a noble deed, without your honor being sweeter still.
