وصولone who joins الدجىnight's darkness فيماin what تحاولyou strive for بالفجرto the dawn
I have known you to journey by night toward the heights, despite weariness,
I found you a secret in the heights though far
joining darkness to dawn in all you strive for.
Seeking you at nightfall though dawn you tried to bar

When the object of your quest bolts, you tame its wildness
When my wish was vehement, glad was I of its rage
with a head soft to the touch, yet hardened by experience.
My reason lost, news flown, perceptions marred

You rise to my aid while swords are blunt,
You stood by me while swords were unsheathed
and rain upon my land while the sky has no rain.
And rained upon my land that was without a shower

You heed my words with an alert ear, knowing
And heeded well my words for one awake, aware
what secrets the All-Merciful has placed in my keeping.
Keeping what the Merciful conferred in me of inner mystic power

Has a tale-bearer whispered slander, or an enemy fabricated lies,
Did some talebearer prattle, some mischief-making spy
so that affection's sweetness toward me has been exchanged for bitterness?
Who turned for me the sweetest love to bitterest rancor?
وليand I have فيكfor you ماwhat لمnot أحْبُهُI bestowed it لمنوِّلٍon a benefactor
وإنeven if جادَgave generously ليto me بالوفرwith abundance وبالدَّثرand with riches
And for you I have what I have bestowed on no benefactor,
You meant more to me than any lofty patron
even if he lavished abundance and riches upon me:
Though he was generous, munificent, a lord

إذاwhen كتمتthey are concealed نمَّbetrays النسيمthe breeze علىof النشْرthe fragrance
rhymed verses like musk's fragrance, not to be hidden;
Melodies like wafts of musk, subtle, unrevealed
when concealed, the breeze betrays their fragrance.
When the breeze was still, though ready to be outpour'd

They turn the tribe's coward, when they are chanted,
Restoring to the coward his valor with your song
brave, and make drinkers need no wine.
Making drinkers forget the wine through music's spell

They are free of faults of speech; when they appear,
Words smoother than all speech should you speak
the stubborn rival acknowledges their glory.
Though warriors scorned you, boasting of their deeds as well

They are immortalized, abiding as long as time;
Ageless, eternal, remaining while others pass
we both pass away, while they remain through the ages.
We two as lions, while kingdoms rise and fall

Will my stipend be dissipated, though my protection
Shall my power fade, my virtue fly away
lies in the cord of Sadid al-Hadratayn, Abu Nasr?
Bound by the rightly-guided Caliph's mighty stall?

And I have, should calamity strike, a sword and a tongue,
Mine to make verses sword and saying keen
both deadly to enemies in safety and terror.
Slaying for foes in time of peace or fearful war

A denier goes off with a share of it,
Some who fled from me self-rejecting died thereby
and Zaki al-Din sets out with a share of it;
While good of faith flourished, on my creed secure

and Ibn Kawzan carries off the rest—may nothing water
And the rest followed Ibn Kawzan, who refused
his abodes but thin white rain-clouds!
To water his domain except with rainfall pure

And I close my eyes to the thorns of tragacanth, forbearing,
I pardoned the sharp thorns of Qatad, wanting not
to preserve my livelihood in Baghdad amid hardship.
A life of ease in Baghdad, though it offered lure

When necessity assails me, turning me from my aims,
When needs constrained me from my course to swerve
I turn to praising misers in verse.
I turned to praise the wine-sippers in pleasant verse

Then my own cloak hangs upon a helpless man,
So my cloak now is worn by a helpless one
and my little garments are buttoned over a feeble novice.
While a nursing lamb bears the weight of my dress

If he cares nothing for the allegiance of one driven
Since he refused to follow the course I set
to him for refuge, his protection brings neither glory nor reward.
He gained no pride thereby, no reward, no recompense

Nothing alarmed me but a venerated chief,
What constrained me was a minister revered
counseling the sultan to withhold and forbid.
Warning the Sultan against rash deeds of reckless moods

And suppose, as was said, he could find no means
A gift, so they say, is narrowed in acceptance
to release a pittance with which to enslave my gratitude.
If base coin is proffered stealthily in pretense

I spoke gently to him, though, had I wished, I could have frightened him
I made no remark, though I could if I wished
by making known my standing and your concern for my affairs.
Have lauded my worth, drawing you to my defense

Are you not the one who went to great lengths for the claim of Aswad al-
Were you not the one who plunged into the murk
Kilabi, until he won gain and abundance?
Where my hounds attacked, till they seized the prey immoral?

When you wish, silence is enough for you;
Silence from you would have sufficed, had you wished
but if you do not, neither my words nor my reminders avail.
Without my talk or poems, valueless, trivial

If the stipend is withheld after being authorized,
Though after permission the flow was blocked
and he fears neither my eloquent verse nor my prose,
No fear had he of my eloquence orfine expressive style

and Ibn Kawzan persists—though his persistence
Ibn Kawzan persisted though his obstinacy
is ruin, sweeping away both his honor and his life—
Led him to ruin, disgrace, and destruction vile

عميدa chief مطاعobeyed القولin his word فيin النهيforbidding والأمرand commanding
and the matter is not remedied in its final stages
No reversal came though the minister forbade
by a chief whose word is obeyed in forbidding and commanding,
None dared oppose his authoritative words and guile

and I go about, despite the heights God has granted me,
I proceeded as God had allotted me
dragging garments of humiliation and poverty,
Dragging a train born of shame and poverty

then the spacious sky is not too narrow for a wanderer,
No narrowness felt I though free to roam
nor are the desolate deserts barred to travelers.
No paths were closed to me over land or sea
