Grant that an excuse for withholding a generous gift has emerged,
The excuses flowed when yearning arrived
With its testimony and proofs shining clear.
Its proofs and signs manifest and clear

معطَّلةً أحشاؤه ومراجلُهْ
Then what excuse have you when a neighbor spends the night on your land,
What excuse for a neighbor who dwells on your land
His innards and his cooking pots lying idle?
Whose hearth is barred and dwelling left fallow and drear

وأتعبُ رزقٍ ما الموفَّقُ باذلُه
And the worst hospitality is that marred by delay from one who has the means;
How wretched the village that lacks a capable chief
And the most wearisome sustenance is what al-Muwaffaq bestows.
How weary the bread that no fortunate hand kneads and makes
