إِلىto ورعٍa devout man جَمِّabundant in العِبادةِworship شاكرِgrateful
God’s favors, bestowed through him and kept with him, are entrusted
The hands of God aid and guard him,
To a devout man, rich in worship and grateful.
To the piety of one whose worship is all-encompassing and thankful,
يُعيدُhe restores نَوارَthe most skittish النَّافراتِof the fleeing ones أنيسَةًtame
ويحبسُand holds back منهاamong them شُكرهُhis gratitude كلَّevery طائرِflying one
He makes the shyest of fleeing favors tame again,
Who returns the radiance to downcast faces,
And his gratitude holds fast every one of them that takes flight.
Yet whose thanks withhold every whim,
يزيدhe grows خُضوعاًin humility كلماwhenever ازدادhe increases قُدْرةًin power
وبادرةُand the first impulse الاِمكانِof power كِبْرُthe arrogance الجبابرِof tyrants
He grows more humble whenever he grows more powerful,
Whose humility increases as his power grows,
Though power’s first impulse is the arrogance of tyrants.
For taking the initiative is the valor of the courageous,
كأنَّas though ضجيجَthe clamor القاربينof those approaching بأرضِهِin his land
وناديهِand his assembly فيin آصالهِhis late afternoons والبَواكرِand early mornings
It is as though the clamor of those approaching his land
As if the clamor of pilgrims at his land,
And his assembly, in his late afternoons and early mornings,
And his caller at night and at daybreak,
ضَجيجُthe clamor حجيجof pilgrims عرَّفواthey observed the ‘Arafah rite بِسويْمقٍat a small peak

Were the clamor of pilgrims who observed the ‘Arafah rite at a small peak,
Is the clamor of pilgrims who knew Suaimeq,
A pledge to them of forgiveness from the One who summoned them.
A guarantor for them, of the All-Forgiving,

Bright-browed, fierce in battle, gentle in his affection,
The bitterest adversity is easy, and its friendship good,
High is his house’s pillar; abundant are his noble deeds.
Exalted is the pillar of the house, abundant in glories,
اذاwhen ماemphatic particle عصتْdefy صيدُhaughty الرقابnecks مُرادَهhis will

When haughty necks defy his will,
When the prey of necks goes against his desire,
He cuts them down with judgment’s edge before the cleaving swords.
He corrects them with sound opinion before the swords,
نُمِيtraced in descent لمعَدٍّto Maʿadd والمساعيand the endeavors حميدةٌpraiseworthy
مُردَّدةٌrepeatedly recounted بينamong النُفوسِsouls الطَّواهرِpure
His lineage is traced to Maʿadd, and his deeds are praiseworthy,
He intended for preparedness while the efforts are good,
Recounted among pure souls.
Echoed between pure souls,
فجاءso he came كنصلlike the blade of السيفthe sword أكرمَthe noblest صاحبٍcompanion
وألْينَand the softest ملموسٍthing touched وأخشنَand the harshest ناصرِdefender
So he came forth like a sword’s blade, the noblest companion,
So he came like the sharp blade of a sword, the most generous lord,
And the softest to touch, and the harshest defender.
And the most gently touched and roughest supporter,

A youth whose wealth is the poor man’s plunder, and whose might
A young man whose plunder is the money of the poor, and whose might
Is sanctuary for the refuge-seeker in treacherous nights.
Is sanctuary for the seeker of refuge in treacherous nights,

And how many a harsh ordeal of dearth and calamity
And how many difficulties of war and calamities
Has been dispelled by the vizier’s flourishing days!
Shone in the days of the brilliant minister,

So may he ever remain the chief of East and West, unharmed,
So the chests of East and West remained safe,
Swift toward goodness, his commands obeyed.
Swift to goodness, obeying commands.
