God has willed only what you desire; so be to Him

grateful, for God's bounty endures through gratitude.

And may you remain safe: lofty honors are radiant

as you direct them between your prohibition and command.

For, throughout the days, the freshness of blossoms

is on your face, O scion of the illustrious sons of al-Nadr.

I knew you when the days were grim, their calamities

robbing jesters' faces of the radiance of cheer.

Yet you, radiant and gallant, surpass in composure

and cheerfulness the impregnable mountain and the dawn.

More bitter than deadly poison in indignation,

and, when pleased, sweeter among men than the wellspring of joy.

And who is like the vizier al-Zaynabi as a defender

and a giver of bounty amid perils and dust-darkened trials?

Mightier in support than a vast army,

and of greater benefit to the lands than rain.

He is stern when mounted combat grows earnest,

yet how compassionate and kind he is in his gatherings!

So may his striving ever remain, though it humbles his foes,

a guarantee of winning praise and reward.
