عنof كنهthe true essence وصفكdescribing you حتىuntil رحتI became ذاone with لكنa speech impediment
For all its breadth, the eloquence of my verses fell short
My eloquent poetry is constrained by what it can encompass
Of truly describing you, until I became tongue-tied.
In describing your essence, so I have come to ask
فجئتُso I came أسألُI ask مَنْthe one نُعماهhis bounty تغمرنيoverwhelms me
رحيبَample حلمٍforbearance علىdespite التقصيرshortcoming يشملُنيembraces me
So I came to ask the one whose bounty overwhelms me
He who has granted me abundant blessings
For ample forbearance to embrace me despite my shortcomings.
The vastness of a dream's hospitality envelops my shortcoming

O winner of glory through striving and through lineage,
O proud of merit beyond effort and lineage
And doer of good in secret and in public,
And doer of good in secret and openly

And reviver of the lifeless, forgotten one, when
Who spreads wellbeing to the desolate and has concealed
The ravages of days and time had concealed his glory.
His loftiness as the days and time pass it by

Of Darim, beside whom Yarbu, though closely related,
From Darim where there is prosperity though if you draw near
Is reckoned in Yemen, so contrary are their qualities.
Counted are those who match its description in Yemen

Jarir boasted of Yarbu; his claim would not have stood
Al-Jarir boasted of prosperity but his claim
Through speech, but for his fierce eloquence.
Was not established in words were it not for the vilification of tongues

And the truth was confirmed, with the multitude bearing witness,
And the truth and wise men bear witness
By al-Farazdaq's words, among nomads and townsfolk.
To Al-Farazdaq's words among nomads and cities

Thus his argument was upheld by the foremost vizier,
So his argument was supported by the minister
Since through all the ages of time there had been none like him.
When the like of him in the ages of time did not exist

Is there among them one, with the kings of earth kissing
Is there among them one whose kingdom the lands
His carpet—the young among their people and the aged?
Kiss from the talk of people and splendor?

Or among them one whose banner of praise
And whose council of peace serves lawgiving and tradition?
And council of peace for canon and tradition?

Far from it! The sons of Hanzala have won it,
Never! The sons of Hanzala have won them
And the two Maliks, with neither loss nor shortchanging,
And the Al-Maliks without loss or despair

Through one bright of face, molded for generosity,
Of bright face created with generosity
Whose bounty the downpour of the streaming cloud covets.
His nobility aims towards the lovely branch

His knee-clasping wrap, on the day of his assembly, is fastened
His love on the day of his gathering
To the crests of a sea or the summits of Hadan.
Is directed to the maidens of a sea or a bosom's embrace

So may praise never pass over Sharaf al-Din when
None but the honor of faith deserves praise when
The gathering grows sweet with mention of the beneficent al-Hasan.
The companion is sweetened by mention of the benevolent beauty

A foremost dignitary—whenever my eye stayed awake to praise him,
A chest, if my eyes keep vigil in praise of it
Sleeplessness was sweeter to it than drowsiness.
Slumber for them is sweeter than gum resin.
