And many a downpour of life-giving rain, its bounty's crests surging,
poured down for me without my watching for rain or glimpsing lightning.

It poured anew after its first fall, as though it were
a later rain following autumn's first shower among the roots.

It saw distress in my circumstances that noble dignity concealed,
and hid its pain with bounty, as an expert would.

And that downpour came only from the fingertips of Ibn Ja'far,
champion of every glory, ancient and new;
مُنَوِّرِlighting جُنْحthe wing of اللَّيْلِthe night مِنْfrom قَسَماتِهِhis features
وكاسفِand eclipsing شمسِthe sun of الصُّبْحthe morning فيin كُلِّevery مازقِperilous strait
lighting the wing of night with his features,
and eclipsing the morning sun in every desperate strait;
وحاطِمِand shattering أطرافِthe points of القَناthe spears بيَرَاعِهِwith his reed pen

and shattering spear-points with his reed pen,
when they are leveled in the narrow press of battle.

إذاwhen البيضُthe bright swords خامَتْshrank back عنfrom ورودِreaching المَفارِقِthe crowns of heads
And Jalal al-Din passes judgment on his enemies' lives,
when bright blades shrink from reaching their crowns.

In council, his knee-wraps encircle a man of weight,
sound in the core of his judgment, overflowing with virtues.

I thanked you as thirst-maddened camels, harried by night travel, thank
a generous resting-place of lovely pasture and flowing water—

except that they give praise without words,
while I praise with a speaking blade, keen on both edges.
