May God pardon her—will her phantom visit,

So union with her may be granted, despite opposition?

Yet meeting the visiting phantom does not quench

A burning thirst; it is but a wish and its delusion.

I remembered her when our clans were neighbors,

Meeting her was easy, and reaching her was near.

And my people and al-ʿAmiriyya’s people were one band,

Like a hand with its fingers, whose parting none would seek.

Companions in bounty, whose gifts are never deemed scant,

And allies in danger whom combat cannot break.

    إذا أَرشقتْ بالقولِ طاشت نبالُها

    And slanderers’ tongues clamor about indecency;

When they shoot with words, their arrows go astray.

So I spent the night as though drinking a potent wine,

Of the vintage, its edge undulled by its clear water.

Love for her demanded only my torment, and now

Her bonds are severed, save the bond of parting from me.

As though the inner wing-feathers of a fledged bird in swift flight

Had lodged in my heart the day her ropes were bound.

    فكيف احتمالي حين جدَّ احْتمالها

    I lost my forbearance while separation lay quiet;

How could I endure when her departure grew earnest?

And what grieved me was that my love was free

Of obscenity, though the world abounds in harm.

When lovers spoke lewdly, I kept chastity company through the night,

To which forbidden and lawful pleasures were alike.

Reverent fear steers me away from what God forbids,

And I deem license and its abuse grave.

Whoever seeks what I seek must regard war as

A maiden whose consummation is the shattering of tall lances.

Those idol-like beauties will unveil to me, seeking protection,

When their men have perished beneath the battle dust.

From early morning, I deny the sword none of its due

Of heads, until their speech proclaims my battle cry.

With true warriors from the flower of Darim,

Resolute when their fighting wears out armored champions.

My steeds stumbled among spear-shafts, and often

Were brought back with kings’ crowns for horseshoes.

A battle too vast for the plain, in pursuit and multitude,

So its mountains shared in it with the desert plain.

I debased my praise, while misfortunes were many,

On base men, whose bounty was itself an injury.

Every dread calamity bars the way to my praise; were it to strike

Radwa’s pillars, they would keep on crumbling.

So if you do not know me, ask the lances and Mujashiʿ,

My resolve, my prudence, the heights and my attainment of them.

And if their honor has rusted, my sharp swords—

In their throats’ blood, their polish will rust.

And my dwelling in Ibn Khalid’s courtyard

Is surely the beginning of a war whose onslaught has ravaged them.

He is the man who gives, sparing one the need to ask him,

When asking tarnishes the whiteness of gifts.

His sanctuary is impregnable: were death to assail his neighbor,

He would repel red deaths, their blades glancing aside.

Firm strands of covenant, whose unraveling none would seek,

And prompt gifts, with no fear of delay.

And bright-faced, lofty of gaze, he is not stirred by the

Base things, even when their beauty adorns them.

Calamities reel while he stands firm, as though

A breeze, with all its frailty, had passed over Sharawra.

    وإن ذُكر الأطوادُ فهو بجالُها

    When generous men are counted, he is their noblest;

And when mountains are named, he is their grandest.

Their swiftest whenever there is good to seek,

And their slowest when anything foul is offered.

And no brimming torrent rushing from a mountain’s summit,

With the uproar of lions when their onslaught looms,

In which the white-footed goats of the heights lie drowned,

    Followed by the desert’s lizard and gazelle;

When it passes over soft sand, roaring,

    Its dunes and sands tumble before it;

You see the trees of the valleys in it as though

    They were ships at sea, abandoned by their crews;

As though the whiteness foaming in its swell

    Were the froth of mounts weighed down by their saddles;

Fed after drought by a dark, heavy-fringed cloud,

Whose south wind lingered and whose north wind vanished,

Traveling by night for hope’s children after a spell of sleep,

Until dawn, its rain pouring and streaming—

Is more copious in bounty than his right hand, when

Its aid and gifts rain upon those seeking his favor.

Enemies seek the glories you have attained,

Yet one seeking an unreachable goal has already failed.

Yours are the people whose palms rain gifts,

When the ashen famine-year has killed its camel foals.

Your fingers are fathers of bounty and mercy,

When you gather in council, and petitioners are their dependents.

Let us congratulate the Eid crescent on your well-being,

For you are the crescent on the horizon of high honors.

O Sharaf al-Din, lend me a discerning ear

To my words, when speech has little scope.

    وشكرُ أيادي المنعمين عِقالها

    I thanked you for the favor that filled my hand;

And gratitude for benefactors’ gifts is their tether.

I have withheld my praises from most men,

And to you go their studied and impromptu strains.

Is there no man to whom I may entrust a grave matter?

But far from it! A knot and its undoing have baffled me.

Who would rage on my behalf until I set war’s mill turning,

With oath-breakers’ homes as the mat beneath it.
