يسُرُّgladdens العُّلىloftiness والمجدand glory والحلمَand forbearance والنَّهىand wisdom
يسُرُّ العُّلى والمجد والحلمَ والنَّهى
وهُنَّand they علىof الفخرhonor الرَّفيعِlofty دَلائلُsigns
وهُنَّ على الفخر الرَّفيعِ دَلائلُ
Lofty rank, glory, forbearance, and wisdom give joy;
Loftiness, glory, forbearance, and wisdom are gladdened—
and they are the marks of exalted nobility.
and they are signs of lofty honor—
طويلُlong بقاءlife الصاحبthe lord الصَّدرthe eminent dignitary تُتَّقىare feared
طويلُ بقاء الصاحب الصَّدر تُتَّقى
سُطاهُhis onslaughts ويُرجىand is hoped for جودهُhis bounty والفواضِلand favors
سُطاهُ ويُرجى جودهُ والفواضِل
Long-lived is the lord, the foremost dignitary: men fear
by the eminent lord's long life; feared are
his onslaught, yet hope for his generosity and favors.

كريمٌgenerous إذاwhen ضنَّare stingy السَّحابُthe clouds بجودِهwith their bounty
كريمٌ إذا ضنَّ السَّحابُ بجودِه
همَتْrains down راحةٌa palm منهof his وجادتْand give freely أنامِلُfingertips
همَتْ راحةٌ منه وجادتْ أنامِلُ
Generous: when the clouds withhold their bounty,
He is generous: when the clouds withhold their bounty,
a palm of his pours forth, and fingertips give freely.

يُقِرُّattests بفَضْليهto his twin virtues منof الباسvalor والندىand generosity
يُقِرُّ بفَضْليه من الباس والندى
حَوافلُrain-laden clouds يَهْميpours down ودْقُهاtheir rain ومَناصِلand swords
حَوافلُ يَهْمي ودْقُها ومَناصِل
His twin supremacy in valor and generosity is attested
His twin virtues, valor and generosity, are acknowledged
by laden clouds whose rain pours down—and by sword blades.

فينْعمُso lives well عامَin the year of الجَدْبِdrought منهthrough him نزيلُهُhis guest
فينْعمُ عامَ الجَدْبِ منه نزيلُهُ
ويشقىand suffers بيومon the day of الحربbattle منهُat his hands المُنازِلُthe opponent
ويشقى بيوم الحرب منهُ المُنازِلُ
Thus, in a year of drought, his guest enjoys abundance,
So in a year of drought his guest thrives through him,
while on the day of war, the foe who meets him suffers.
while on the day of battle his opponent suffers at his hands.
حييٌّmodest علىdespite إِقْدامِهِhis boldness واجْترِائهِand his daring
حييٌّ على إِقْدامِهِ واجْترِائهِ
وكُلٌّand each زعيمٌa guarantor بالثَّناءِof praise وكافِلُand a surety
وكُلٌّ زعيمٌ بالثَّناءِ وكافِلُ
Modest, for all his bold advance and daring;
Modest despite his boldness and daring,
everyone avouches his praise and stands its guarantor.
and each trait is a pledge and guarantee of praise.
كليْثِlike a lion of الشَّرىal-Shara فيهin him حَياءٌmodesty ونجْدةٌand valor
كليْثِ الشَّرى فيه حَياءٌ ونجْدةٌ
ونصْلُand a blade يَمانٍYemeni لَيِّنُsupple المتْنthe spine قاصلcleaving
ونصْلُ يَمانٍ لَيِّنُ المتْن قاصل
Like a lion of al-Sharā, he holds both modesty and valor;
He is like a lion of al-Shara, with modesty and valor,
and like a Yemeni blade, supple in body but cleaving.
and like a Yemeni blade, supple-backed yet cleaving.
حياةٌlife وموتٌand death بأسُهُhis might ونَوالُهُand his bounty
حياةٌ وموتٌ بأسُهُ ونَوالُهُ
إذاwhen أجلبتcome clamoring أعداؤهُhis enemies والوَسائلُand pleas for favor
إذا أجلبت أعداؤهُ والوَسائلُ
His prowess and his bounty deal death and life,
His might is death, his bounty life,
when his enemies muster with all their means.
when his enemies and pleas for favor come clamoring.
كمثلlike السَّحابthe clouds الجونdark غيثٌlife-giving rain وصاعقٌand a thunderbolt
كمثل السَّحاب الجون غيثٌ وصاعقٌ
وماءِand the water of الفراتthe Euphrates العذْبِsweet مُرْوٍthirst-quenching وقاتلand deadly
وماءِ الفرات العذْبِ مُرْوٍ وقاتل
Like the dark cloud—life-giving rain and thunderbolt—
Like dark clouds, bearing rain and thunderbolts,
and the Euphrates’ sweet water, thirst-quenching yet deadly.
and the Euphrates' sweet water, thirst-quenching and deadly.
فهُنِّيَso may he be congratulated بالعيدon Eid السَّعيدjoyous وغيرهِand others besides it
فهُنِّيَ بالعيد السَّعيد وغيرهِ
مدىthroughout الدهرall time ماas long as روَّىquenches صدىthe thirst of الأرضthe earth وابلa downpour
مدى الدهر ما روَّى صدى الأرض وابل
So congratulate him on this blessed Eid, and on others to come,
So may he be congratulated on this joyous Eid and others,
throughout all time, while downpours slake the earth’s thirst:
for all time, as long as downpours quench the earth's thirst.
دُعاءُa prayer وَلاءٍof loyalty لاnot دُعاءُa prayer رَغيبَةٍfor gain
دُعاءُ وَلاءٍ لا دُعاءُ رَغيبَةٍ
وإنْeven though زادgrows إِحسانٌkindness وأفْرطَand overflows نائلُbounty
وإنْ زاد إِحسانٌ وأفْرطَ نائلُ
a prayer of loyalty, not a prayer for coveted gain,
A prayer of loyalty, not a prayer for gain,
though his kindness increase and his bounty pass all bounds.
even though kindness grows and bounty overflows.
