And many a frightened man, full of caution, without provisions,

Disheveled, hurrying, shunning the watering place,

Fear shakes him as a shivering fit would.

He journeyed by night through darkness and a biting north wind,

Groping through the depths of a long night.

He halted, finding in you a sheltering champion,

And spent the night between dryness and moisture,

Between stern martial strength and a welcoming lodging,

In a sanctuary far removed from harm,

And amid generosity that never pleads poverty,

With a lush springtime and a mighty army,

With the vizier Sharaf al-Din Ali,

With the generous lord, the high-hearted man, the hero,

Who, in forbearance and keen-edged resolve,

Is both an unscalable mountain and a sword:

The bestower of bounty, even when not asked,

And the bearer of debts when none will bear them.

What a fine halting place for the fearful, hopeful man,

For slaying enemies and slaughtering full-grown camels.
