معاذَrefuge in اللهِGod أنْthat أُزجيI offer عِتاباًa reproach
أكونُI would be بهthrough it بعيداًfar عنfrom صَوابِwhat is right
God forbid that I should offer a reproach
that would take me far from what is right—
ولاand not سيماthe like of عِتابَreproach of أخيmy brother عَلاءٍʿAlāʾ
سليمunblemished العِرْضin honor منfrom عارٍshame وعابِand blemish
especially a reproach to my brother ʿAlāʾ,
whose honor is free of shame and blemish.

ويحسدand envies جودهُhis generosity دَرُّthe outpouring السَّحابِof the clouds
Bright, keen swords covet his sharp resolve,
and the clouds' downpour envies his generosity.

وإنْeven though حُلِّيتُI am adorned بالشيمِwith the virtues العِذابِthe sweet ones
Yet I am bitter-tempered and dull-witted,
though adorned with sweet virtues.

Nor did I fear his blade's edge; rather,
love of the flies' sweetmeat held me back.

Had news of that indignity ever leaked out,
the plain would have been crowded with fierce, angry warriors;

and the noble chiefs of Tamīm would have come,
the sons of al-Ṣayfī, not Saʿd of al-Ribāb.

When their swords are drawn to meet a threat,
they are sheathed nowhere but in necks.

So if I have become a full moon in some station,
you are the sun, beyond all doubt.

A guilty man denied me the light, but only
by a bolted door's fastening, in a doorway's shade.

How much you have done for me, O good ʿAlī:
favors beyond all counting!

They have a fragrance when I speak of them,
as when the trunks' musk pouches are opened.

So bear with me amid the surging flood,
for reproach is the touchstone of affection.
