Better a blow from al-Hadi than backbiting,
even in a word of gentle reproach.
كمmany منof عَدوٍّan enemy صُنْتَهُyou shielded him غائباًwhile absent

Many a foe whom you shielded in his absence
from wanton disparagement has become a close friend.

Al-Afwah's courage is shown in battle;
and backbiting is only the way of the base.
