    Hail, knight of battle-dust's night,

And foremost in every battle and gathering,

With congratulations for each year to come.

Your house's pillars lofty, your dwelling spacious,

Looked to for bounty, generous to guests.

You protect and offer hospitality with bounty and the blade,

In war and in dreadful, desolating drought.

For you are the fearful one's best refuge,

And a fine shelter for the famine-stricken and destitute.

You shower the hollows of the bare, barren plains,

With a raincloud pouring from your fingertips.

And you fell both adversaries, never remiss:

The shrewdest of able men and the host's champions,

Between silencing argument and a cleaving sword.

    Until, when al-Aʿzal's rain-season failed,

And the booming thundercloud's voice died,

And the wind died, its vein grown rigid,

And an untethered beast resembled a nursing doe,

From drought—even the city was like a trackless waste—

And the pampered man sank into humiliation,

After the overflowing heaps in his great bowl,

Longing to swallow dry colocynth seeds,

The vizier, taking the initiative unasked, spared us

The need for rainclouds' bounty and milk-rich herds' gifts.

Crown of kings, holder of the noblest station,

    Tamim was gladdened—every unfettered prince,

And every man of raging battle and boiling cauldron—

By a new deed sprung from your deep-rooted glory,

That revived the faded traces of ancient pride.
