Between proud defiance and patience rages a battle

That has driven the eyelid far from slumber.

But for the vizier and his bounty, it would have killed

A man of reason amid the torment of worry and sorrow.

And a man's speech may sometimes

Be inarticulate, yet among the silent be reckoned eloquence.

So may no word of praise pass Ibn Tirad by,

As long as God is proclaimed One, in private and in public.

Lavish in kindness, he looks upon no neck

But it bears the collars of his favors.

He shuns ease if his actions there invite reproach,

And seeks praise in a harsh abode.

My gaze and my heart are bewildered when I behold him,

Between his beneficence and his handsome appearance.
