ويحملهُ مع اللُّطفِ النَّسيمُ
The caravan falters in conveying my longing,
Yet the breeze, for all its gentleness, bears it.

While my body remains in Baghdad.

Yet I am barred from reunion, despite my yearning,
By calamities, all of them pitch-black darkness.

I deem concealing them a duty of prudence,
Even if my worries betray me by revealing them.

Whether Time acts unjustly or the stars set without rain.

By him one dies, and through his bounty one lives—
A rival or a pauper, in two dust-filled places.

By the most approachable among them when morning rains are withheld,
And their staunchest protector when the sanctuary is humbled:

Kindness did not create love in me;
My soul's love for you is long-standing.
