فِ مسح الأيدي ونفضِ الغُبارِ

I carry it not merely for adornment and elegance,

Nor merely to wipe hands and shake off dust,

بل لأُخفي سرَّ الهوى عن رقيبٍ

بل لأُخفي سرَّ الهوى عن رقيبٍ

ليس أهلاً للعلم بالأسْرارِ

ليس أهلاً للعلم بالأسْرارِ

But to hide love’s secret from a watcher

Who is not worthy of knowing secrets.

أُوهِمُ العينَ منه مَسحَ المُحيَّا

أُوهِمُ العينَ منه مَسحَ المُحيَّا

ومُرادي كَفٌّ الدموع الجواري

ومُرادي كَفٌّ الدموع الجواري

I make his eye believe I am wiping my face,

While my aim is to hold back the flowing tears.
