Though the force of an excuse has held back my praise, I am

Bolder and more eloquent in my heart than with my tongue.

And I, though I have become the most steadfast of lovers,

Do dread the mind's imaginings, and tremble.

    وآخر ذو صمتٍ واِنْ راحَ ينطقُ

    And many a man is silent about a duty, yet speaks;

Another remains mute, though he goes on speaking.

I fear a resolve of Hashimite stock:

When it is drawn, the sharpened Mashrafi blade is humbled.

May God guard Sharaf al-Din, for everyone

I see is darkness, while he is a radiant dawn.

The young man of the clan—his generosity is vast,

All-embracing; but his room for excuse is narrow.

Noble in steadfast affection, neither fickle

Nor easily wearied, nor worn and threadbare in love.

When a people's reputations are fragrant with praise,

Then from his honor radiant praises waft their fragrance.

He lends his swiftest aid, though unarmed,

And gives his utmost bounty, though destitute.

So may the festivals be congratulated on the noble man they have in him,

Who lends the face of glory splendor and luster.
