Truly, they have all they need in the chieftain of Hashim's house—

Glory's companion—and need no Amr or Malik.

So now the meadow longs for them to step gracefully through it,

And the desert pools wish they would wade through them like a traveler.

They drank their fill of slumber in the most comfortable abode,

And were made to forget the winding dunes' loose sands and the sandy flats.

They forsook all but the vizier's court and bounty,

Among mankind, as beauties forsake the husbands they loathe.

The court of a generous man, should dire hardship strike

From drought—a forgiver of grave wrongs, deadly in assault.

His petitioners share with him the choicest of his wealth,

Yet in his glory he has no partner.

Unbending in strength, hard for his foes to lead,

Though in friendship he is gentle of temper.
