    I owe weighty verse, abundant in praise,

    abiding through time's passage and everlasting.

    فتلك التي تلْتاثُ منها العقائدُ

    Nor am I to blame if it falls short of the loftiest hopes;

    for those are what throw convictions into confusion.

    Nor does it please me to be a sword when I lack

    fingers to draw it for combat, or an arm.

    And often has injustice turned forbearance into rashness,

    even though a patient, loving man guards it through the night.

    So may the minister never lack praise, for I

    battle the nights' calamities with his bounty.

    A generous man—whenever giving impoverishes his hand,

    gratitude and praises then enrich his honor.

    ووِرْدٌ من النَّعْماء والجود بارد

    A blazing fire of fearsome valor,

    and a cool draught of bounty and generosity;

    and wakeful in pursuing high honor, though he

    slumbers in the face of wrongdoing, his indignation fast asleep.

    Nor will generous Sharaf al-Din find

    praise like my verse—and the enemies bear witness.

    Why, then, does he not deem fulfilling my request a prize,

    even if dread and hardships stand in its way?
