Firm of strength, unswerving in resolve, valiant—

His councils and his battles alike stir up dust.

    وفي الحرب طعنٌ لا تكلُّ لهاذمهُ

    For in peace, his speech is unassailably sound;

And in war, spear-thrusts whose points never grow blunt.

He masters both: discerning judgment and the cleaving blade—

A hero like a sword-blade, his noble virtues abundant.

When his ruling reddens a master's cheek,

He sends battle's armored champion back with his throat bleeding.

And if elusive glory bolts from the high-born,

His pens and his swords capture it for him.

For glory swims between crimson and pitch-black,

Contained in his written pages and his clashes.

    تَفُلُّ خميس المُحْفظات مراحمه

    His forbearance casts broad shade; he sits firm, knees clasped;

His mercies rout the army of provocations.

When terrifying folly surges across his land,

He towers like Radwa's summit, his pillars firmly settled.

He pardoned, then drew the offender near, so that

The wrongdoer's crimes became his means of approach.

    And no fault but he veils it with nobility;

And no anger but he restrains it with forbearance.

Abu Ja'far, crown of kings, through whom

Poetry's eloquence and its poet are adorned.

Cheerful of countenance when faces scowl,

His sword and his smiles dispel their gloom.

He delights in the terrors of close combat, as though

His foe on the day of battle were at peace with him.

Radiant, with gladness rising from his features,

And from his beneficent hand his rain clouds pour.

And I indeed look to him for deep-rooted glory,

As a rain-watcher looks in hope to the horizon's cloud.

May the kingship of Tamim relent, returning

Through him, while its festivals ring with my praises.

So may they live again, though long ages have left them mouldering bones—

Its Mujashiʿ, the two Maliks, and its Darim.
